چکیده

Introduction: Gullies were first noted in Mars Orbiter Camera images [1] and have since been found to be commonplace throughout the mid-latitudes on Mars [e.g. 2]. These features are often associated with the action of liquid water, either as unconcentrated water flow or debris flow [e.g., 3,4]. The fact that gullies are found predominantly in the mid-latitudes and have a pole-facing preference [2] points to a climatic influence on their formation. We present a study of gullies in craters in the regions of Terra Cimmeria, Noachis Terra and Acidalia Planum (Fig. 1) using HRSC topographic data at 100 m/pix or better. We aim to determine if craters with gullies have a different morphology to those with no gullies.

The Morphologic Difference between Crater Slopes with and without Gullies

Gullies on Mars are km-scale landforms that resemble small fluvial features on Earth. Their discovery [1] challenged the paradigm that over the last ∼2 Ga, Mars has been a dry, frozen desert. The gullies are found commonly in the mid-latitudes, have a pole-facing preference [e.g., 2] and are found many kinds of steep slope (valley wall, dunes, etc.). We have chosen to concentrate on gullies fou...

Gully Slopes and Discharges on Lyot Crater’s Central Peak

Introduction: Since the discovery of gullies on some crater slopes and valley walls [1], there have been several hypotheses put forth concerning their origin and formation [2-10]. This study focuses on gullies that are located on the central peak of Lyot crater located in the Northern Plains of Mars (50.4N, 29.3E). The gullies source between 150m and 750m below the top of the central peak. A pr...

Gullies and landslides on the Moon: Evidence for drygranular flows

[1] High-resolution images from Chandrayaan-1 Terrain Mapping Camera and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera reveal landslides and gully formation on the interior wall of a 7 km-diameter simple crater emplaced in Schrödinger basin on the farside of the Moon. These features occur on the steep upper crater wall, where the slope is ~35 . The gullies show a typical alcove-channel-fan morphology. So...

Comparison of Martian Gullies and Lunar Crater-wall Landslides

I present lunar landslides that bear a striking resemblance to some martian gullies, despite the lack of water on the Moon both today and in the past. This observation indicates that gully features can be formed via a dry landslide mechanism. Thus on Mars, morphology alone is insufficient to determine the mechanism of formation of these features. Introduction: In 2000, Malin and Edgett (1) repo...

Northern-hemisphere Gullies on Mars – Distribution and Orientation from the Evaluation of Hrsc and Moc-na Data

Introduction: Gullies show morphologic features that indicate the presence of a flowing liquid during their forming process [1]. However, the current climate in the northern hemisphere of Mars does not allow the existence of substantial amounts of liquid water for a long time. Therefore, the exploration of particular young landforms, such as gullies is a valuable tool for understanding the most...
